You’ve probably heard the buzz words “super foods” by now but just what is a superfood and why do we need them?
Super foods are foods in these categories — vegetables, mushrooms, legumes, fruits, nuts, oils, herbs, spices, grains, seafood, dairy, nutritional supplements — thought to be nutritionally dense and therefore really great for our health. Getting a clearer understanding of what qualifies food to be called a superfood, is definitely worth spending some time on.
The term super food is first believed to have appeared in 1915 and then again in 1949, but most modern day doctors aren’t likely to use this term when speaking to you about your health unless they practice functional medicine. Throughout human history, every culture that we have records of has observed and noted that certain foods have superior health-supporting properties. This phenomenon is universal. Nutritional science over the past 100 or so years has confirmed that certain foods do in fact have higher than normal nutritional properties than others.
The entire category of phytonutrients is a great example. Twenty-five years ago they were largely unknown while today we are beginning to understand how important & beneficial they really are.
Thanks to modern technology combined with scientific research, we are able to identify these foods which possess not just a single nutrient, but many and offer us many benefits at the same time. This means in time, you get more nutrition with less food and that contributes to generally better health and longevity. Studies show once you start consuming superfoods on a regular basis, you will start noticing the difference in not only in how you feel, but also how you look. These nutrient dense foods can flush out toxins, maintain your weight and give you a healthy glow.
Typically superfoods contain antioxidants, minerals, vitamins, amino acids, essential fatty acids, polysaccharides, enzymes and glycol-nutrients. It’s important to make sure you choose pesticide free organic sources for these nutrients so they act faster and work better in your body. Given the current state of the general populations’ health, we should all do our best to incorporate as many everyday superfoods as possible into our regular diet.
