Detoxification – Why We Need It
The average American consumes one gallon of chemicals per year.
It’s spring and for many, that means time to clean the house and get rid of the unnecessary old and stagnant stuff. But really the most important kind of spring cleaning you can do is for your body. Traditionally, spring is considered the most important time for internal cleaning.
Practiced for centuries by many cultures around the world — including Ayurveda and Chinese medicine systems — the process of detoxification rests, cleans and nourishes the body from the inside out. But detoxing can also be important at any time of the year if you are suffering from unexplained fatigue, sluggish elimination, irritated skin, allergies or low-grade infections; bags under the eyes; a distended stomach even if the rest of your body is thin; menstrual difficulties; or mental confusion.
- The benefits of detoxing are many:
- Weight loss
- Better digestion
- More energy
- Improved mental focus
- Less joint pain
- Less congestion
- Fewer symptoms of chronic illness or allergies
- Improved sleep
- Clearer skin
Living in the modern world, our bodies can get to feeling pretty grubby inside. Between the sugars, refined flours, caffeine, alcohol, dairy, chemical food additives, pesticides, and environmental pollutants we encounter, our cells are exposed to myriad toxins and inflammation triggers.
The average American consumes one gallon of chemicals per year. Where do these chemicals go? They go into our cell structures and reside there until our liver can detoxify them and eliminate them from our bodies. The liver performs approximately 500 functions in the human body. It is critical to cell life that the blood be clean and full of oxygen. When the blood becomes polluted it begins to affect digestion, energy production and mood and begins to set the stage for many degenerative diseases.
Most people don’t realize that the liver needs to be detoxified in two phases in order to get the maximum benefits from cleansing. Put simply, Phase I prepares the toxins for Phase II, which flushes them from the body. By working in synchrony, these two phases ultimately convert undesirable chemicals into a form that can be eliminated or excreted by the body.
Next we should look at other parts of the body that need cleansing support.
- Lymphatic system cleansing is often used during or after a chronic infection but can be done in the spring or anytime. Dry skin brushing is a very effective and at home way to help stimulate and keep the lymphatic system working at its optimum. Also consider treating yourself to a lymphatic massage.
- Sweating therapy is excellent for overall purification and balance. Since the skin is the largest organ of elimination sweating is very effective. Diaphoretic herb (herbs that promote sweating) such as yarrow, elder, peppermint combo work well in tea form. Dry saunas, sweat lodge and exercise are some other ways of promoting sweat.
- Urinary cleansing is used to aid the kidneys ability to eliminate toxins from the blood. Mild diuretic herbal teas work well in toning and aiding this elimination process.
- Intestinal and bowel cleansing is what we most commonly use for situations of constipation or lower bowel irregularity. High fiber diet and bulking agents are used in many cases and are milder than the purge laxatives (which can be harsh). It is important to keep the bowels clean and moving during detoxing and every day.
It is also important to understand that the process of detoxification requires you to rest and ride out a few unpleasant symptoms that arise when the toxins are being moved and expelled from the body. Those symptoms can include headaches and fatigue the first couple of days. By day 3 though, mostdetoxers experience a surge of energy and generally feel pretty good.
If you’re new to detoxing, we have the perfect, easy-to-follow protocol that can provide a physical and psychological jump start. If you’re a veteran, our protocol is ideal too and can help you build on healthful habits.
